What I love about MY south: Music

My South

Here is the first of a series I wanted to write about all the great things there are to love about the South.

When I was in first grade, my parents decided to move our family of five from our home in New Jersey to Georgia (a sixteen hour drive) where we didn’t know a soul. Best. Decision. Ever!

I am so thankful to be where I am today. I really believe it took guts for my parents to make that decision and I can’t thank them enough every day for the sacrifice they made to give us a better life.

All of that aside, I have a true story to tell you. I grew up listening to the late 80s/early 90s light pop stuff. I was in love with Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul and just about whatever else my mom listened to. But I come from a family of pranksters: My mom and dad told me that when we moved to Georgia, there would be nothing else on the radio but country music. I think they went out and bought the worst country album (sorry folks, just my opinion) they could find and gave me this:

They told me to get a jump start on the music so I would fit in quickly. Ick. Ick. Ick. What was wrong with them!?! Thankfully, I was introduced to the better side of country and have enjoyed the works of some of the most diverse artists in the world. Each of them has his or her own unique style and I can call their names even if it’s not a song I’ve heard before.
